DHL and Scania Partner to Drive Logistics Forward in East Africa

11 MARCH 2025

DHL Supply Chain, in collaboration with Scania, Kenya, has taken another step towards more efficient road transport with the deployment of 25 new Euro 5 biodiesel-powered trucks. This initiative, the first of its kind in Kenya and the broader East African region, highlights both companies' commitment to using the most efficient technology available in the Kenyan market, enhancing road safety, and improving fuel efficiency through advanced driver training and telematics.

A step towards more efficient Logistics

The introduction of these state-of-the-art Euro 5 trucks is part of DHL Supply Chain’s ambition to modernize its fleet in Kenya, with the most efficient solutions available.

Scania East Africa, the supplier of the twenty-five trucks, is a key supplier for DHL. Scania is committed to sustainability and has established its own Scope 3 Science-Based Targets, aligning with the Paris Agreement. The company is actively working towards a cleaner transport future by promoting alternative fuel solutions, enhancing vehicle efficiency, and supporting industry-wide carbon reduction initiatives. This collaboration with DHL includes partnership in other markets, including a currently announced test of the first electric truck with fuel-powered range extender at DHL’s German headquarters in Bonn. This is a testament to Scania’s vision of sustainable transport, reducing the environmental impact of road transport.

"At Scania, we recognize the urgent need for sustainable transport solutions across East Africa and beyond. This partnership with DHL is a reflection of our ongoing efforts to offer cleaner, more efficient alternatives that align with both regional and global sustainability goals. By introducing Euro 5 trucks powered by biodiesel, we are not only reducing emissions but also paving the way for a future where 100% renewable fuel adoption is possible. Our commitment extends beyond just providing vehicles—we continue to invest in innovations, services, and partnerships that support a long-term, greener transport ecosystem for the region," said Vincente Connolly, Managing Director, Scania East Africa.

Reducing Emissions and Fuel Consumption

The newly acquired Scania Euro 5 trucks offer a significant reduction in harmful pollutants compared to traditional diesel vehicles. These benefits include:

  • Lower nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particulate matter (PM) emissions, contributing to improved air quality.
  • Enhanced fuel efficiency, optimizing mileage while reducing overall fuel consumption.
  • Lower carbon footprint, supporting customers in achieving their sustainability goals.

Safety and Efficiency at the Forefront

Customers’ commitments to safety and operational excellence is further strengthened through the integration of AI-powered onboard cameras and Scania’s advanced Fleet Management System (FMS):

  • AI-driven smart cameras monitor driver behavior, detecting fatigue and distractions to prevent accidents.
  • Real-time telematics tracking via Scania FMS enables smarter route planning, fuel monitoring, and predictive maintenance, reducing downtime and increasing efficiency.
  • Driver training programs ensure optimal use of these cutting-edge vehicles, improving fuel economy and road safety.

"East Africa is at a critical juncture in its development, and reliable logistics and transport solutions are key to supporting this growth. The deployment of these Euro 5 trucks is a practical and immediate step to enhance the efficiency of our operations. This partnership reflects our commitment to innovation and road safety and shows our dedication to support economic growth in East Africa through state-of-the-art logistics solutions," said Tito Okuku, Managing Director of DHL Supply Chain for East Africa.
