First time driving an electric truck
What do timber truck drivers and a forestry company with strong sustainability ambitions think of the electrification of the forest industry? Find out in this film.
The forestry industry demands robust logistics, as transporting timber is often a challenging task carried out in tough conditions. Timber truck drivers must manage heavy loads while navigating narrow, winding roads and hilly terrain, often in remote areas.
Could logistics in such an industry be electrified? During their recent visit to Scania in Södertälje, Sweden, we posed this question to key people at Holmen, one of Scandinavia’s largest forest companies, and some of the transport companies that are involved in Holmen’s extensive logistics operations.
Electrification supports the goal of zero emissions
Elin Jaldeland, logistics specialist at Holmen, was keen to emphasise the sustainability perspective:
“For us at Holmen, this is really important. We need to make this journey along with our haulage companies. The goal of the forestry industry is to have zero emissions by 2040,” she said.
Driving electric “an amazing feeling”
Many of the drivers and transport company owners zoom in on the driving experience. For Lars Johansson, owner of Johansson haulage company, the best thing about driving electric is how you’re just “swooshing forward”.
“It’s an amazing feeling,” he said.
Henrik Johansson, owner of Julita haulage company, was impressed by the traction and how “the truck pulls you all the way without having to shift gears”.
“We operate heavy transport on narrow forest roads; 64 and 70 tons. Here, electric power is a great idea for sure,” he explained.
