Get first in line to upgrade your tachograph

Due to new EU regulations, all trucks, coaches, and buses in cross-border traffic will need a new tachograph. The sooner you upgrade, the sooner you can reap the benefits. We can fit a new smart tachograph version 2 for just £1879.00.

Frequently asked questions

The new tachograph legislation mandates that all commercial vehicles over 3.5 tonnes must have a smart tachograph version 2 (SMT2) installed for continued traffic to and / or between European countries.

Vehicles registered after the 21 August 2023 are all fitted with SMT2 tachographs, regardless of whether they operate internationally or not.

Smart tachograph version 2 (SMT 2) are compulsory for all   commercial vehicles over 3.5 tonnes registered after 21 August 2023.

For vehicles registered before 21 August 2023 and engaged in cross-border traffic, the following dates apply:

Vehicles equipped with an analogue or digital non-smart tachograph need to upgrade to a SMT 2 tachograph by 31 December 2024.

Vehicles equipped with a smart tachograph version 1 need to upgrade to a SMT 2 tachograph by 18 August 2025.

There are a few ways to find out whether your vehicle has a smart tachograph version 2. For example, the VDO DTCO 4.1 has a small Bluetooth icon on the top right-hand side of the display, and the Stoneridge SE5000 smart 2 tachograph shows the word ”Smart 2” above the SE5000 name on the right hand side of the unit.

Less manual input and fewer stops, basically. Automatic border crossing detection eliminates the need for manual entry. Since roadside inspection officers can communicate remotely with the smart tachograph version 2 without stopping the vehicle, compliant drivers will be able to continue their journey uninterrupted, saving time and resources.

The penalties differs somewhat between the EU member states, but in general, not having a smart tachograph version 2 installed and in use by the specified deadlines, or driving without a type-approved tachograph installed is considered a ”most serious infringement” (MSI) or a ”very serious infringement” (VSI) and could result in fines of up to €30 000.

The retrofit will require up to five hours in a Scania workshop.

No, your Scania workshop can handle your entire fleet, regardless of brand.

The new tachograph legislation is part of the EU Mobility Package, which is a collection of European laws and regulations for the transport sector aimed at improving social conditions for drivers, increasing road safety and providing equal access to European markets.

New features of the smart tachograph version 2 include automatic border detection via satellite connection and built in Bluetooth capabilities for wireless readout of tachograph data.
