M/S Rex af Stockholm goes electric

5 SEPTEMBER 2024

M/S Rex af Stockholm is the passenger ferry used for commuting between the island of Ekerö and the city in summertime. With her huge engine room and sturdy hulls, Rex was a perfect fit for batteries.

She has a propulsion system, a propeller shaft, and a propeller, powered by a Scania 13-litre, 6-cylinder engine at 405 kW or 550 HP. She also has an electric motor, parallel connected which develops approximately 230 kW.

With several operational modes, she can either run on pure combustion engine power or pure electric power for about two hours. Or in a hybrid mode where the combustion engine drives and uses the electric motor as a generator to recharge the batteries.
