Investing for the future of students – and the planet

Students and teachers at the Björknäs Upper Secondary School in the northern Swedish city of Boden are thrilled with the school’s latest acquisition – a Scania R 410 biogas truck. The vehicle will be used by the school’s vehicle and transport vocational programme to train the drivers and service technicians of tomorrow.
“I’m so very pleased that we’ve been given the opportunity to make this large investment for our students, teachers and for the future,” says Head Teacher Anette Lund. “We train students for the future labour market and, as technology changes, we need to keep up with developments.”
First school in country to invest in biogas truck
It is not by chance that Boden is the first school in the country to invest in a biogas truck. The municipality built its first biogas plant for anaerobic digestion of organic household waste already in 2003, and has since expanded its production facilities.
Currently, the municipality of Boden has 130 municipal cars, 13 buses and three refuse trucks that are fuelled by biogas. And the municipal fleet was recently complemented by a Scania G 340 truck for transporting sand and clearing snow, plus a Scania G 280 truck that is used to collect recycled waste. Needless to say, both run on locally-produced biogas.
Patrik Larsson, a teacher at Björknäs Upper Secondary is also pleased by the school’s latest addition.
“This is really fantastic. We’ve worked for quite a while to train our students in the type of modern equipment that they will use after graduation, while also utilising a vehicle that contributes to a better environment,” notes Larsson.
Final-year student Samuel Strömberg likes the idea of driving the new truck.
“This truck is so much nicer. Hopefully it will help to increase interest in the vocational programme and attract more students,” Strömberg says.
